I am the Raman-Guy in the group of Prof. Heberle. Of course I am using other spectroscopic techniques, but mainly Raman spectroscopy. During my Master thesis I have learned to hate and love this technique. I developed my interest in spectroscopy and biophysics during my studies which limited to the FU Berlin except for one year of ERASMUS in Barcelona.

My research focus is mainly on the invesigation of membranes and proteins embedded within. To achieve a controlled environment I bind a lipid bilayer ontop of a metal surface. This opens a variety of options. Since the Raman effect is a comparable weak one, I use several techniques to get a nanostructured metal surface which give rise to surface enhancement. Furthermore, this metal can act as an electrode enabling electrochemical measurements. This combination of an controlled enviroment, electrochemistry and spectroscopy holds great potential to investigate the influence of electric field on membrane proteins via vibrational spectroscopy.
